Chair Yvette Lewis Responds to Voter Suppression Sentences

On June 13, 2012, in Blog, by Matt Verghese

Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis issued the following statement today after Julius Henson and Paul Schurick were sentenced. The sentencing was in connection with the deceptive automated phone calls made on November 2, 2010 intended to suppress minority and Democratic voter turnout.

The outcomes of the trials of Julius Henson and Paul Schurick have sent a loud and clear message – voter suppression will not be tolerated. Voting is at the heart of our democracy and any effort to restrict voting rights for partisan gain is illegal and morally reprehensible.

While these decisions are a victory for the voters of Maryland, I remain concerned about Republican efforts across the country to make voting more difficult. These tactics disproportionately affect the voters who support President Obama and Democrats. As Americans, we must continue to fight to ensure that every vote is counted, every voter is respected and that every person has the confidence that their vote will matter.

I agree totally that they both got what they deserved.  To try to hold down the vote through misinformation involving voting times and tallies goes well beyond the normal candidate character assassination that is involved in politics.

It is a shame that the Maryland Democratic Party openly favors voter disenfranchisement that benefits its political stands.  The Maryland Democratic Party in fighting the petition drives through bills that would require signature notarization and going to court to try to nullify the Dream Act petitions by calling the Dream Act falsely primarily a spending bill is wrong.  Voters deserve to vote on the Dream Act, same sex marriage, and congressional redistricting.  We have no provisions in the state constitution for statewide initiative and recall and the state democratic party is trying to weaken the referendum laws not because these provisions are not favored by voters and these provisions would not promote greater democracy and voter participation.  No, we don’t have these provisions because most of the state democratic party leadership wants political power at the expense of basic disenfranchisement of voters and  democracy.  Maryland democrats, who share my views,  please support the petition drive at https://mdpetitions.com/ and sign for the petitions to let the voters have more say in these issues and not just power power hungry politicians.  Petitions must be signed and delivered to Maryland Petitions before the end of this month.

I am proud to be a democrat but I am not proud of our state democratic party leadership.
