Former Democratic Party Chair Phil Johnston (MA), and Chairs Yvette Lewis (MD), Anita Bonds (DC) and Mike Tate (WI) discussed why Mitt Romney and his policies are wrong for seniors, women, the middle class and the country as a whole.

Romney proved he was no good for Massachusetts, which ranked 47th out of 50 in job creation while he was Governor. That’s not the story Romney has been telling on the campaign trail. But no matter how hard Mitt Romney and his campaign intend to shake their etch-a-sketch campaign to dissolve the extreme positions he has taken on just about every issue, those who know him best will be here to remind voters of each and every one of them.

His full embrace of the Paul Ryan budget plan, which would end Medicare as we know it to help pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, shows whose interest he has at heart.  He’s supported policies that restrict access to preventive healthcare for women, has declared he’d “get rid of” Planned Parenthood, and would gut investments in education and infrastructure. Mitt Romney has four words for the middle class, women and seniors: you’re on your own.

Below are the remarks for Chairwoman Lewis as prepared for delivery:

Chair Tate is exactly right. There is absolutely no way that voters are going to forget the extreme policies and rhetoric Mitt Romney has used in order to pander to the Tea Party and help secure the unenthusiastic Republican vote.

When Mitt Romney visited my state just last week, everyone was talking about the incendiary comment that he would “get rid of” federal funding for Planned Parenthood,  a vital health care provider for millions of American women, that gives women affordable access to life-saving services like breast and cervical cancer screenings.

For the 3 million people who rely on Planned Parenthood as their only option, Romney’s extreme views are more than out of touch – they are dangerous, they’re a monumental step backward, and they threaten to undermine women’s health care in this country.

But this is just the latest in a long string of restrictive and deeply out-of-touch positions that Romney has taken on women’s health in an effort to pander to the extremists in his party.

Mitt Romney also recently declared his support for the Blunt-Rubio Amendment, a dangerous and extreme attack on women’s rights which would take women’s health decisions out of women’s hands and give it to their bosses. He said he would have supported a “Personhood amendment” in Massachusetts, defining life as beginning at the moment of conception. It could have taken away a women’s right to choose and likely banned many common forms of birth control.

These are just some of the many incredibly restrictive measures Mitt Romney has taken in an effort to woo Tea Party voters and try to clinch the Republican nomination.  And though it won’t be for lack of trying, the women in this country will not forget no matter how hard Romney tries to shake the etch-a-sketch.

More days, more ways

On March 22, 2012, in Blog, by David Sloan

Are you voting early this year? I am.

Starting Saturday, Marylanders will be able to vote early in the 2012 primary election. Early voting is an easy and convenient way to make sure your voice is heard.

Find early voting hours and locations here.

From March 24 to March 29, you can cast your ballot at any early voting center in the county where you live. The early voting centers are open from 10 AM to 8 PM each day, except on Sunday when early voting centers will be open from 12 PM to 6 PM.

Democrats have strongly supported and utilized early voting across the country. Maybe, that’s why Republicans in more than half a dozen states have passed laws in the last 2 years to reduce early voting. In Maryland we’ve done the opposite and added early voting on Sundays.

I’ll keep fighting to make voting easier, but I need you to exercise your right to vote.

I’ll see you at the polls
