Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake today released the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s speech in Cleveland, Ohio:

Today, we heard President Obama articulate his strong vision for creating jobs, reducing the national debt, and fostering a climate of innovation and entrepreneurship in America.

At a time of great economic uncertainty, our President made the tough choices and smart investments that created new economic opportunity for the people of Baltimore. We cannot afford to follow Mitt Romney’s path, which would return our country to the failed ‘Bush-era’ policies of the past: Big Tax cuts for the wealthiest first and no rules for Wall Street—all while middle class families fall further and further behind.

As the President has said, this election is a make or break moment for the middle class. Baltimore cannot afford to go backwards. America must move forward. President Obama has the right vision for an economy that’s built to last, where everyone plays by the same rules, everyone gets a fair shot, and all families have a chance to achieve the American dream.

Maryland Governor and Democratic Governors Association Chair Martin O’Malley released the following statement on President Obama’s speech:

Today President Obama laid out the clear differences between an economic plan that expands jobs and opportunity, and the failed policies which drove our country into debt and recession. The choice is clear — we can create jobs, as our parents and grandparents did, by expanding opportunity; or we can further concentrate wealth in the hands of the few at the expense of the many.

President Obama understands that we must invest in our middle class now in order to create an economy for the future, one that is built to last. He believes in an America where hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and everyone deserves a fair shot. Mitt Romney is offering the same failed Bush policies of the past that crashed our economy and lead to a 40% decline in wealth for the average family. The President’s speech in Ohio today was a clear indication of the choice Americans have in this election: We can return to the failed Bush policies that lead us into the largest economic collapse since the Great Depression or we can apply pressure to Congress to pass President Obama’s American Jobs Act so that we can continue to move America forward.

Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today released the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s speech in Cleveland, Ohio:

Today the President articulated a clear vision for how we can grow the economy, create middle-class jobs and pay down the debt, highlighting the stark choice facing Americans in November. The greatest challenge of our time is to address the persistent and debilitating gaps in opportunity that exist in our communities. In Maryland, we know what’s at stake in this election, and it’s clear that the path laid out by the President is the right course for America’s economic future. For our State and our country to continue moving forward, we need a true partner in the White House — President Barack Obama.

President Obama understands that we must invest in our middle class now in order to create an economy built to last. He knows that a rising tide can only lift all boats when all boats are seaworthy, when every individual and every family has the same opportunity to achieve the American Dream. He believes our country prospers when hard work pays off, responsibility is rewarded, and everyone gets a fair shot.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, is offering the same failed policies of the past that benefited a select few, crashed our economy and devastated the middle class. We can’t afford to go back to the policies that led to the economic crisis. The President’s speech in Ohio today was a clear indication of the choice Marylanders and all Americans have in this election: We can continue to move forward with President Obama or go backwards with Mitt Romney.
